S4K's board members are dedicated to helping multiracial families needing hair care in communities nationwide.
THE FOUNDER
Tamekia Swint founded Styles 4 Kidz (S4K) in 2010 with a simple yet powerful vision: to ensure every child feels confident and valued through proper hair care. Her journey began after a transformative experience teaching a hair braiding class during a mission trip to Poland. Inspired by two words, "kids and hair," Tamekia returned home with a calling to make a difference.
Shortly after, she was introduced to a transracial adoptive mom seeking help with her daughtersβ textured hair. Pleased with Tamekiaβs skill and care, this mom connected her with a network of adoptive families who shared the same need: a safe, judgment-free space to learn how to care for their childrenβs hair.
Recognizing the widespread need among multiracial, transracial adoptive, and foster families, Tamekia grew S4K from serving three families in Illinois to helping thousands across the United States. In 2013, S4K expanded its mission to include in-home education and training for foster children in residential care and children with special needs. By 2016, the organization rebranded as Styles 4 Kidz to better reflect its growing impact.
In 2018, S4K achieved a pioneering milestone. It started the Care and Confidence program, under which the organization opened the first nonprofit 501(c)(3) salons of its kind. This unique space provides hair care services to children in multiracial, adoptive, and foster families, empowering them to embrace their natural crowns and build confidence and self-esteem.
Tamekiaβs passion for hair care extends far beyond stylingβitβs about transforming lives.
"Iβm passionate about hair care education and ensuring kids have the tools they need for healthy self-esteem and confidence. With your support, we can make this a reality for children everywhere." β Tamekia Swint
Through her dedication, Tamekia is building bridges for communities where every child, regardless of their background, can feel seen, valued, and loved. Join us in supporting this life-changing mission.
Tamekia holds a B.S. in Community Health from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, an MBA from the National Louis University Chicago, and is a Licensed Hair Braider and Hair Braiding Teacher in IL.
