Parent Advocates

Supports parents of Transracial adoptive, foster, and biracial children in navigating hair care importance. Advocates locally and nationally for appropriate hair care services, education, and support for their children. Cultivates parent relationships to underscore the significance of children's hair care.

Network Training for Styles 4 Kidz, presentation by Tamekia

Network Training Membership Includes:

  • Opportunities to teach S4K workshops.

  • Free ongoing hair care training through S4K.

  • Tax benefits for any donations to S4K.

  • Connection to a network of stylists who support the mission and vision.

  • Presence on the S4K website as a Certified Network Trainer*.

NOTE:*A Cosmetology/Cosmetology Teacher or Hair Braiding/Teacher License/ is required to participate.

To join the S4K network you must demonstrate:

  • A strong desire to help biracial, transracial adoptive and children in foster care and their parents.

  • Passion for the Styles 4 Kidz mission and vision.

  • A willingness to spread the mission and vision in your local community by hosting events and teaching at S4K events.

PARENT ADVOCATES

What We Do

  • Supports parents of Transracial adoptive, foster, and biracial children in navigating hair care importance.

  • Advocates locally and nationally for appropriate hair care services, education, and support for their children.

  • Cultivates parent relationships to underscore the significance of children's hair care.

  • Organizes community-building events within the S4K community emphasizing care, culture, and hair.

  • Fosters partnerships with foster and adoption agencies to promote hair care training for Transracial families.

Group Values

  • Ensure mandatory haircare and hygiene.

  • Provide children with racial mirrors via S4K events.

  • Establish a secure space for cultural dialogues, guidelines, and terminology.

  • Support parents in navigating shame and uncertainty.

  • Continuous education on hair care.

  • Encourage parental involvement in salon cultural experiences.

  • Normalize saying, "I don't know."

  • Learn culturally and age-appropriate hairstyles and hair care.

Ways we educate parents:

  • Engaging fun facts and stories about hair and culture.

  • Diverse cultural events and programs.

  • Addressing cultural insensitivity among white siblings, peers, and family members, especially concerning haircare and appropriation.

  • Conversations on white saviorism and developing self-awareness.

  • Guidance on advocating for your child within your white family and community.

  • Strategies for responding to racism in your community, neighborhood, and family.

Groups meet monthly or quarterly in different areas (currently in Chicago and DC)
